The new Whole Foods Market at Springfield Plaza, double the size of the chain’s existing and soon-to-close West Springfield store, opens Oct. 4, the Amazon.com Inc.-owned company announced Thursday.

The imminent opening of the nearly 50,000-square-foot Whole Foods at 6426 Springfield Plaza nearly completes the game of musical chairs among area grocers. Whole Foods is taking the place of Giant Food, which relocated in 2020 to another part of Springfield Plaza formerly occupied by Kmart.
