Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain Wawa is looking to substantially increase its footprint in Northern Virginia as it competes with others, including Sheetz and Rutter’s, for choice spots in the commonwealth.

The chain, which has fixed its gaze on Greater Washington since the late 1990s, has retained McLean-based commercial real estate services firm Rappaport to scout out sites in Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Rappaport recently began marketing Wawa’s interest to prospective property owners with sites for sale or lease that meet its search criteria.

It could potentially open around 20 stores under the current push, which also includes the cities of Alexandria and Fairfax, per Pat O’Meara, executive director of brokerage, who’s part of the Rappaport team representing Wawa, along with Chris Pamboukian.
