Trek Bicycles has signed a lease to open a store at Skyland Town Center, becoming the first bicycle retailer to locate east of the Anacostia River.

Headquartered in Wisconsin, Trek manufactures and distributes a variety of bicycles, biking apparel, and accessories through independently operated stores across the country and subsidiaries abroad. This Skyland location will be the second Trek store in Washington, DC.

Trek anticipates opening the 3,200 square foot Skyland store in November 2022.

In addition to offering a unique retail experience east of the river, Trek plans through the Skyland location to continue supporting social responsibility initiatives aimed at bringing opportunities in the biking industry to underserved communities.

One of these programs is GRIT USA, a Washington-based adult, high school endurance and multi-sport development program that advances athletes to new limits inspires communities and enacts socio-cultural and economic change.

Another DC-based program Trek supports is the Prime Ability National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) team, based out of Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. Prime Ability was created by Dunbar teacher and coach Alex Clark’s vision to bring structure and opportunity to students throughout the pandemic. Several students on the team were supported with bikes and gear through the Pathfinders Scholarship, an initiative of Trek and NICA.

“The Washington area is rich in biking opportunities, from bike trails throughout the region and more and more bike lanes on city streets,” said WCS Smith Chairman and CEO Chris Smith. “Yet those opportunities have been historically out of reach for many residents living east of the Anacostia. Trek’s opening at Skyland Town Center, and the programs it supports in DC, will make a big difference in changing that dynamic.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome Trek Bikes to Skyland Town Center. With the bicycle boom that happened in 2020, due to Covid, there’s been a high demand for bicycles and repair services,” said Bill Dickinson, Executive Director of Brokerage at Rappaport. “We know the value that they’ll bring to the residents east of the Anacostia River, through their unique retail experience offering – a variety of bicycles, biking apparel, and accessories. This location truly reinforces their mission to bring bikes, jobs, and stores to underserved communities.”

Skyland Town Center is a mixed-use development located at the intersection of Alabama Avenue, Naylor Road, and Good Hope Road SE in Washington’s Ward 7. Rappaport and WC Smith, lead the retail and residential leasing and strategy, respectively.

Roaming Rooster and the first drive-through Starbucks in DC opened at Skyland this year, joining a CVS and a Chase Bank branch. The Crest, a 263-unit multifamily property (and future home to Trek), opened in April 2021. Slated to open later this year are several restaurants, a health services facility, a Lidl grocery store, a barbershop, and a nail salon.
