A major theme when a person walks through the halls of Rappaport is the ubiquitous culture that was shaped by its founder, Gary D. Rappaport, CRRP.  Gary, a 35-year veteran of the D.C. commercial real estate scene, runs his life and business under a “one-third” mantra: a third of your life should be devoted to family, a third to work and a third to giving back.

Gary practices what he preaches, making time for friends and family, regularly mentoring fledging commercial real estate contacts, teaching courses at ICSC Recon and guest speaking at law schools so interested students can learn more about the commercial real estate field.  Most recently, Gary will be speaking at a Bisnow’s “How to Make It in Commercial Real Estate”, discussing what it takes to cultivate and nurture the right workplace culture, build a client base, and close deals.

This mentality has driven many projects and developments within Gary’s decades-long career, most notably Skyland Town Center.  The 18.5-acre mixed-use development east of the Anacostia River took roughly 15 years to get off the ground.  Without Gary’s commitment to the residents of this vastly underserved D.C. market, Skyland would not be completing the first phase of construction within the next two years.

“I have dedicated myself to this project and built treasured relationships within this community, so success at Skyland Town Center is more important to me than any other project,” says Gary.  “Like so many great ones, the story of Skyland Town Center is rich and multilayered, and soon Washingtonians will be able to experience the much-anticipated Skyland Town Center vision in real life.”
