Local Shopping Centers Donate $1,000 to North Forestville and Doswell E. Brooks Elementary Schools

Prince George County, Maryland

1/25/2010

The merchants of Penn Mar Shopping Center and Penn Station Shopping Center donated $1,000 to North Forestville Elementary in Forestville, Md. and Doswell E. Brooks Elementary in Capitol Heights, Md., respectively, as part of the shopping centers' annual holiday shopping spree promotion. North Forestville Elementary School received the donation courtesy of Ronelle Taylor of Forestville, Md. She listed North Forestville Elementary School as her favorite school on an entry form she filled out for a shopping spree drawing. Doswell E. Brooks Elementary School received the donation courtesy of Lawanna Stokes of Capitol Heights, Md., who entered the contest at Penn Station. In addition to a $1,000 donation to the two schools, Taylor won a $500 shopping spree to Penn Mar Shopping Center and Stokes won a $500 shopping spree to Penn Station Shopping Center.

Since the holiday shopping spree promotion began in 2000, Penn Mar merchants have donated $9,000 to local schools. Penn Station merchants have donated a total of $3,000 over the last three years. Schools receiving prior donations include Berkshire Elementary, Longfields Elementary, Andrew Jackson Middle School and Suitland High School.

North Forestville Elementary School Principal Melissa Ellis said she plans on using the donation for both student and staff incentives. "This encourages students and rewards staff members," she added.

Doswell E. Brooks Elementary School Principal Anita Stoddard plans on using the donation for incentive programs as well. "There are criteria for earning these incentives, such as perfect attendance for the week, completing all class work and homework and reading logs," added Stoddard.
